A breaking news report or Special report (also called Newsflash, Newsbreak and special coverage) is a news story of such importance that it warrants an interruption of current non-news programming, or a national network’s regular newscast. Such reports can last for a few minutes, or multiple hours or even days depending on the event. Prior to the existence of 24-hour news channels, such breaks were restricted to the most urgent events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which prompted widespread national coverage requiring stations to interrupt their regular programming. Breaking news stories may also be accompanied by lower thirds and other graphics that communicate urgency.
