Trending is a news segment used by many television and radio networks. It typically appears as an overlay on top of the regular newscast, and is accompanied by a distinctive, urgent music cue. The term may also refer to the breaking news itself, or the telecast of the report, which is usually highlighted by special graphics and lower thirds that convey a sense of urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, programming interruptions were usually reserved for extremely serious events that required nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Breaking news can also elicit national network affiliate cut-ins, in which case a countdown sequence is used to allow network affiliates to join the feed.
