Trending is a news segment where the anchor talks about trending stories or topics. It is usually accompanied by graphics and a distinctive music cue. It is often used to interrupt non-news programs or, before 24-hour news networks existed, regular network broadcasts of television and radio newscasts. When breaking news warrants an interruption of current non-news programming, the newscaster will often open with a special graphic and countdown sequence letting station affiliates know to switch to the network feed. Alternatively, “Newsflash” or “Special Report” tickers may be used in place of a cut-in during regularly scheduled programs. These are sometimes referred to as “Breaking News Alerts” in the U.S.
