Before 24-hour cable and radio networks existed, breaking news would elicit nationwide coverage that required broadcasters to interrupt regular non-news programming (or even regularly scheduled network newscasts). This was done with a special graphic called a “Newsflash” or “Special Report” ticker that is shown over lower thirds during regular programming.
