A breaking news story is a piece of timely news that warrants an interruption in regular programming. Breaking news is typically delivered as a “newsflash” or special report, but can also be featured in a regular scheduled network newscast. When breaking news occurs, the station will interrupt the current program or newscast and announce that a special report is to follow, or a countdown sequence will begin (which allows network affiliates to switch to the network feed). The special reporting may be limited to only a few minutes of coverage, or it may continue for several hours or even days, with analysts in-studio or via phone, satellite or broadband.
