This week, CBS News took a boat into the Strait of Hormuz. Here’s what we saw.
A breaking news story is an urgent piece of news that warrants interruption of normal programming (such as television or radio broadcasts, or a live regularly scheduled newscast). This type of coverage typically includes an opening graphic or alert crawl with distinctive music cue, followed by the network feed to any affiliates that may wish to switch to the new report. Prior to 24-hour news networks, national network affiliates would interrupt regular programming with a cut-in using an alarm sound or station imaging promo that read “Newsflash” or “Special report”.

These days, it’s common for a major news event to prompt a breaking news break on any network that has a live anchor available at the time, eliminating the need for station or network affiliations to use the old method of interrupting current non-news programming with a cut-in. Depending on the nature of the breaking news, this coverage can be very brief or may continue for several hours, with some stations inserting their local news segment within the special report, as in the case of the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, an event that prompted widespread, nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their programming.
