About Current News
Trending is a term for breaking news stories that are gaining popularity among viewers. These stories are often covered in the form of a special report, or a segment within a regular newscast. A special report is generally preceded by a countdown sequence, and may feature a graphic with a distinct music cue. It is then followed by an anchor, who welcomes the viewer to the break in coverage, and begins to present the story. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were usually reserved for extremely urgent news events, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, for which a special report was aired nationally.
