Breaking News is when an urgent event occurs which requires the immediate interruption of current non-news programming or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts. The event may require that national network stations pause their feed, allowing affiliates to join the feed and start the breaking news report, or it may simply be announced in advance as a pending breaking news alert, followed by a countdown graphic and distinctive music cue. In some cases, this report will last a few minutes, or in extreme circumstances, may be broadcast live for hours or even days. The news may also be conveyed by special tickers or lower thirds during regularly scheduled programming, as was the case with events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy and other major national tragedies prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels.
