When a breaking news event occurs that warrants the interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts), networks often alert their affiliate stations to “stand by” and use an opening graphic with a distinctive music cue. The newsflash or special report may last for a few minutes, or continue for hours, days, or even weeks. During this time, lower thirds and other graphics are usually altered to convey a sense of urgency. In some cases, network feeds from satellite or the internet can be used to provide breaking news, reducing the need for cut-ins. [1]
