Current News is a term used by television and radio broadcasters to describe breaking news stories. Usually, the story being covered is considered to be of a high degree of importance and has a strong impact on viewers.

Breaking news is usually a major event or crisis that warrants an interruption of regular programming (including daytime and late-night programs) in order to provide the most recent details of the incident. This coverage may last several minutes or hours, and can be continuous for days at a time, especially during large scale events such as disasters.

Depending on the nature of the story, broadcasters use various techniques to convey a sense of urgency, such as changing lower thirds or other graphics, or employing a live reporter in the field to cover the event. For instance, ABC’s “breaking news” during the April 2017 Shayrat missile strike lasted for nearly two minutes as they interviewed multiple witnesses and captured images of the damage.

The format of breaking news on television often consists of an opening graphic and voiceover that announces the event. In some cases, this is followed by a reverse countdown from 5 seconds to allow network affiliates to join the broadcast, which is accompanied by a brief video clip of an anchor introducing the news story.

The outro usually includes a promo for viewers to visit the network’s website for more information or other platforms that may be available to watch the live coverage as it unfolds. Occasionally, this outro will include a link to a breaking news web page on the same site.
