Breaking news is a term used by television and radio broadcasters for breaking stories that require immediate, unscheduled coverage. When a breaking story occurs, the network will typically interrupt its regular non-news programming, with a graphic and distinctive music cue (such as “Newsflash” or “Special Report”), followed by a countdown sequence for affiliates to switch to the news feed. In addition, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. In recent years, 24-hour news channels have incorporated special tickers for select breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for such cut-ins.
