Breaking News is a segment on a news program that reports on breaking stories. These segments can be a special report, or a segment within the normal programming of a news program. If the story is deemed to be important enough, stations may interrupt regular commercial advertising or even their own newscasts to air the story. This type of broadcast was rare prior to the creation of 24-hour news channels, but is commonplace on those networks today. During breaks, station ID graphics and lower thirds are often altered to emphasize the importance of the event.
