A news report may last minutes, hours, or days. News events may be covered continuously for days, like the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which lasted from November 22 to 26 1963, or the September 11 attacks, which lasted from September 11 to 15. In addition to news reporting, networks may integrate a live analysis of a story, either in studio or over the phone. Similarly, regular commercial advertising may be suspended for sustained coverage.
Breaking news, which is also called late-breaking news, is a phrase used to describe a live story, important at the time it is reported, and news that is still developing. The term “breaking news” is used to describe a news story that is of immediate public interest, but is not new in the first place. Streaming news is a flexible way to consume news, since it travels wherever you go. Further, it reduces the element of scarcity in the media equation.
Local stations may have an opportunity to break away from the network feed, for example, at the start of evening newscasts. Local stations then follow a cue from the network talent, which may pause for a short time before re-joining the broadcast. Local stations will often return to the network feed after a break or join the ‘extended’ edition. It is a great strategy for news stations. And it works for you.
