There’s a new kid in town when it comes to streaming news. CBS News has entered the market. And they’ve brought along an aggressive local streaming strategy.
The news streamer model looks a lot like cable’s. Free, and usually offering cable quality news, these news aggregators want to persuade viewers that they don’t need a cable subscription.
Streaming news has proven itself a viable source of mass audiences. It provides the ability to customize a viewing experience, and repurposes programming from broadcast. But its appeal is not limited to the masses. In fact, it has attracted a variety of niche audiences.
This new approach also creates an environment for more automated news gathering. Many newsrooms are now using social media platforms to gather and report news. They are now performing news gathering on mobile devices, as well.
Streaming allows for quick and timely delivery of news. It also reduces the scarcity factor in the media equation. Streaming makes video news ubiquitous.
Several streaming networks offer documentaries, as well as news analysis. Most offer regular nightly news programs, including reruns.
As streaming increases, the boundary between print and television has become blurred. These boundaries have also given rise to a new set of journalistic principles.
CNN was criticized for its lack of audience in its early years. Critics didn’t anticipate the rapid rate of adoption that would soon occur. But as viewers became more accustomed to watching streaming, networks began to sense the momentum in the streaming audience.
