A news break is an interruption of current non-news programming (or, occasionally, even regularly scheduled network newscasts) to report on an event of immediate importance. The interrupting news broadcast is usually referred to as a newsflash or special report, and may use a distinctive opening graphic and music cue to distinguish it from the regular programming of a station or the national feed of a network affiliate. Lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Such breaks are most common for breaking events that require nationwide coverage and thus prompt multiple stations to stop regular programming.
