When a breaking news event occurs that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming or, in the case of network-affiliated stations, of regularly scheduled newscasts, the national news feed will pause briefly and then begin a countdown sequence to allow affiliates to switch to the national newsfeed. Then the station’s regular graphics are replaced with a special “Newsflash” graphic (often with a distinctive music cue) and the news anchor begins the coverage. In the past, breaking news was only interrupted for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy or severe weather, but this practice has become less common since the introduction of 24-hour news networks and their live reporting anchors.
