Breaking news is a segment of a television or radio broadcast in which the national network’s news program interrupts regular, non-news programming to cover an event that warrants immediate coverage. Depending on the severity of the event, breaking news may last only a few minutes or continue for hours or days. Historically, this type of news segment was called a “Newsflash” or a special report; and before the advent of 24-hour news networks, stations would interrupt regularly scheduled programming to air an emergency news break for events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
