Breaking news is an urgent event that warrants the interruption of regular non-news programming on television, radio, or online. Such events may require an immediate response, such as a severe weather event that threatens life or property, or require extended coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which elicited nationwide coverage that required many stations to interrupt regular programming and use special “Newsflash” or “Special Report” graphics. These reports often include a countdown to allow affiliates to switch to the network’s feed, and may feature lower thirds or other graphics with a sense of urgency.
