When a story occurs that warrants an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming (or, in some cases, newscasts), it is considered Breaking News. Upon such an event, networks will usually use a distinctively colored graphic overlay and a special music cue to indicate a news break is about to occur. Some breaking news events may last only a few minutes, while others require sustained coverage over several hours or days. Historically, such breaks were only used for extremely urgent news events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or severe weather events requiring all stations to interrupt their programming. However, with the advent of 24-hour news channels, breaking news events are now commonly interrupted through “Newsflash” or “Special Report” tickers.
