When an urgent news event occurs, network affiliate stations may interrupt regular non-news programming or, if the report is of significant national interest, a nationally broadcast newscast in progress (either live or pre-recorded). A graphic, usually with a distinctive music cue and an altered lower third, identifies the breaking story. “Newsflash” or “Special report” are other terms used for such interruptions, although tickers during scheduled programming have been common since the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
