If an event is deemed urgent enough to interrupt non-news programming, or in some cases even a network newscast, the breaking news is usually preceded by a special countdown sequence that tells affiliate stations to “stand by.” Once the break begins, the network feed switches to a graphic with a distinctive music cue, followed by a news anchor who welcomes viewers and introduces the story at hand. During the breaking news, lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered to convey a sense of urgency. This is particularly common with the major networks’ 24-hour news channels, which often have an anchor available to break in at any time.
