Trending is a term used by television and radio stations to alert viewers when an event has spiked in popularity on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. The event may be local or national in scope and could relate to current events, celebrity gossip, sports or politics. A news anchor will often break into regularly scheduled non-news programming to cover the story. A special graphic and distinctive music cue will appear on the screen to announce the story. Prior to the emergence of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were limited to extremely urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963 or severe weather events.
