Trending is the section of Current News that talks about what people are interested in and what stories are gaining traction on social media. Typically, the segment starts with an identifying graphic and a distinctive music cue, and the news anchor will then introduce the topic or story. Often, breaking news events warrant the interruption of regular non-news programming (or, in the case of network newscasts, a live feed from the network). In addition to “Newsflash” or special reports, many stations now use scrolling tickers during regularly scheduled programs, lessening the need for program cut-ins. Previously, breaking news was limited to major events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
