Breaking News is a live report on a topic that is developing rapidly and requires immediate attention. Typically, this type of news will cause the network to interrupt non-news programming or a regular newscast, and may require affiliate stations to suspend their commercial advertising. When the breaking news occurs, a graphic will appear on-screen and a distinctive music cue will sound over the network feed. Until the introduction of 24-hour television, news interruptions were rare and reserved for events that required immediate coverage such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, or severe weather. Some networks also use a ticker during normal programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
