When an event occurs that warrants immediate, breaking news coverage, the normal non-news programming of a broadcaster is interrupted and a special report is immediately shown. The news story may be shown only for a few minutes, or if the event is very serious and warrants ongoing coverage, then an alert crawl or lower third graphics will inform viewers of the duration of the report. If the break is during a nationally networked newscast, a countdown sequence is used to allow station affiliates to switch to the national feed before the report begins. In the days before 24-hour news networks, breaking news interruptions were very rare and typically restricted to events of national significance, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
