Breaking news is a television or radio news report that warrants an immediate interruption of regular non-news programming, or in the case of network newscasts, a pause to allow network affiliate stations to switch to the national feed. Breaking stories are usually covered by a news anchor, and may have a distinctively styled opening graphic or music cue (also known as a newsflash, special report, or ticker). The use of breaking news has become more common since the advent of 24-hour news networks; previously, interruptive breaks were only reserved for very urgent events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
