Breaking news is a short report or news item that interrupts current non-news programming (or, in the case of network news broadcasts, regular newscasts). Such breaks were once rare and reserved for extremely urgent events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, that required all local and national stations to interrupt their regular schedules for live coverage. Breaking news is typically announced through a distinctive graphic, often with a distinctive music cue. The break may also be preceded by a network feed countdown and instructions to affiliated stations to switch to that feed. This type of breaking news is also known as a Newsflash or Special Report.
