When cable TV first entered the news streaming business, critics wondered why people would watch a new channel dedicated to breaking news. They missed a pent up demand for alternatives.
It turns out that the reason is simple: people want faster, more effective news. Streaming news makes that possible. The result is a slew of new choices. Whether you’re looking for news on politics, sports, entertainment, or anything else, there are plenty of options to choose from.
Some of the major news networks are betting big on streaming. For example, NBC News Now produces 31 million hours of programming each month.
Another major network, CBS, also entered the news streaming game, and plans to begin scheduling regular nightly news programs for its streaming service. Fox has already attracted 1.5 million subscribers for its Fox Nation streaming app.
In addition to breaking news, a new streamer like NewsBreak offers a customizable experience, allowing users to express their opinions, block topics, and more.
Unlike the traditional town crier, streaming news travels wherever the viewer is. A streamer can even set up a DVR and timeshift.
Major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. Despite some early failures, they have high hopes for the future.
Streaming also allows networks to archive content, which means viewers can access it at any time. That means news libraries can be built more economically.
Online video streaming also won’t be bound by costly negotiations with cable companies. As a result, it’s likely to attract new overtly political news operations.
