Trending is a term used by television and radio stations for the most urgent, often time-sensitive news events, such as severe weather, a natural disaster, a terrorist attack, or a presidential assassination. Depending on the severity of the event, regular commercial advertising may be interrupted or even replaced by a breaking news alert crawl (also known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special Report”) that is overlaid across top-of-hour or network affiliate graphics. In the days before 24-hour news networks, such breaks were usually reserved for major events that required widespread coverage requiring many stations to interrupt their own programs or a national network’s regular newscast.
