A news event that demands immediate and urgent coverage, usually necessitating an interruption of regular programming. Breaking news is often referred to as “Newsflash” or “Special Report” in broadcasting, and is commonly seen on 24-hour news networks. In the past, such breaks were primarily used for events with widespread impact (such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy), but they have become more common for all news events that require an immediate interruption of the network’s feed. The break typically begins with a distinctive opening graphic and music cue, followed by the news anchor or correspondent and a live shot of the breaking story. If the event requires continuous reporting, lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
