About Trending
When breaking news occurs that warrants a national network television station to interrupt its regular non-news programming or regularly scheduled newscast, it will usually alert its affiliate stations to “stand by” and begin a countdown sequence, allowing affiliated stations to switch to the network feed. The national network may also provide a special graphic and distinctive music cue to signify the break in programming. In addition, many networks now use “Newsflash” or “Special report” tickers during regularly scheduled programs to convey the urgency of an event without having to interrupt programming. This practice was previously reserved for events that elicit nationwide coverage and require numerous stations to cut-in.
