Trending is a term used to talk about current news that has been popular recently. If a national network is already airing when a breaking event occurs, the network will usually alert its affiliates to suspend their regular programming and switch to a break-in, or “newsflash”. A countdown sequence is often used, followed by an opening graphic with a distinctive music cue. A special news anchor is then introduced, and the report is broadcast for as long as necessary. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news channels, breaking news events were typically limited to those that required a large amount of nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, which prompted numerous television and radio stations to interrupt their programming.
