What are the different types of Current News? Breaking news, special coverage, and late breaking news are common terms for the most important stories of the moment, and can be used to describe live stories or events of widespread interest to viewers. Its meaning has dwindled somewhat over the years, with many 24-hour news channels now using the term merely to fill space with commentary. It has also been replaced by “Just In” as a synonym for “breaking news.”

Breaking news is usually followed by a short pause, where the anchor introduces the story, allowing other network affiliates to join the feed. Breaking news may be accompanied by music to emphasize the dramatic nature of the news. The anchor may alter the lower third of the screen to convey a sense of urgency. In general, breaking news is a form of “news that breaks” or “news that isn’t yet confirmed,” with the anchor introducing the story in the most prominent place.

Breaking news may interrupt prime time programming. In some cases, it can be extremely disruptive to otherwise good programming. For example, ABC’s Scandal episode was interrupted in April 2017 by a missile strike. During these times, the network can broadcast only one segment, while the local station may show two segments. Nonetheless, the local station may choose to air the entire episode. In this case, the viewers don’t need to tune in again.
