Trending is a term used in broadcast news to refer to events or topics that are currently popular with viewers. These stories are usually discussed in the newscast and analyzed by the network’s analysts. Typically, breaking news events will interrupt non-news programming or, for network newscasts, a countdown sequence will be displayed to allow affiliate stations to switch to the network feed for the report. This report is sometimes referred to as a special report or newsflash. Breaking news is an important aspect of 24-hour news channels, which are often live and ready to interrupt programming for any topic at any time.
