When a major news event occurs that warrants an interruption of current non-news programming, or even in some cases, regular newscasts, the network will alert its affiliates and ask them to stand by for a break. The national feed will then pause for a short period of time, often with an overlaid countdown sequence, before a special graphic open with distinctive music cues is shown. This is known as a “Newsflash” or a “Special report”, and in the past was limited to events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, which required nationwide coverage and numerous stations to interrupt their programs.
