When breaking news events occur that require immediate, urgent coverage, the network will usually interrupt regularly scheduled programming (or in the case of a nationally broadcast newscast, the newscast will pause briefly to allow affiliates to switch to the network feed) and begin a countdown sequence, which is followed by an opening graphic, with a distinctive music cue. During these reports, station imaging may be overlaid and lower thirds are often altered to convey a sense of urgency. Prior to the rise of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were reserved for extremely serious news events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
