Breaking news is a term used by television and radio broadcasters when a significant news event happens that warrants an interruption of regular programming. It can also refer to an ongoing news story that requires live reporting, such as a severe weather event.
When a breaking news event occurs, the station will usually tell viewers to “stay tuned”, and then cut-in to a special news report or live anchor. The network may then give instructions to its affiliates, asking them to stand by to join the feed.
This can last for only a few minutes, or it may continue for hours or even days. In the case of continuing coverage, the station may interrupt commercial advertising for an extended period of time. Lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
