Trending is a graphic used by television and radio newscasts to alert viewers of breaking news events. Breaking news usually involves an urgent and important story that requires the immediate interruption of non-news programming (or, in the case of network affiliates, regularly scheduled local or national network newscasts). Prior to 24-hour news channels, such breaks were generally reserved for extremely serious or opportune events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, or for severe weather conditions that elicited widespread coverage requiring numerous stations to interrupt regular programming. In recent years, networks have introduced “Newsflash” and “Special report” tickers to reduce the need for break-ins.
